On August 1, 2013, membership was expanded to include Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH)-accredited programs of public health. 1) I am very interested in a number of the fellowships. Is there a limit on how many I can apply to?
  Applicants may apply to any number of fellowship programs, for example, EPA, CDC Rosenfield, CDC, NHTSA or ASPPH, however within each program you can only apply to a maximum of three positions.
2) And…am I required to submit a separate essay for each position?
  Yes, you are required to upload an essay for each individual position to which you apply. So, even if you are applying to just one program, but to three different positions, you will need to submit three different essays targeted specifically to each position.
3) I am not a US citizen, am I eligible? And if not, where can I find information about programs open to non-US students?
  The fellowship programs are open to US citizens and permanent residents only. Although we do not have a comprehensive listing of programs open to non-US citizens, we suggest you check with your instituions' career services office as well as the ASPPH website
4) I am a part-time student at an ASPPH member, am I eligible?
  Part-time students are eligible for our internship opportunities. The fellowships are open to students who graduated within the last five years.
5) Must you have an MPH specifically, or is it acceptable to have an MSPH, MHS, or other graduate degree from an ASPPH member?
  Yes, all Master’s and Doctoral degrees from ASPPH member, CEPH-accredited schools and programs of public health are eligible.
6) I asked my faculty advisor to provide a recommendation but he/she may not be able to get it done by the deadline. Will you accept it late?
  In order to provide a fair, open and transparent system, the deadline date is strictly adhered to by ASPPH.
7) A friend who graduated from my school last year and is currently a fellow in one of your programs is encouraging me to apply. Should I list her as a reference?
  Applicants may ask whomever they choose as a reference. However, we strongly encourage you to get a reference from a faculty member or public health professional who can speak to your skills and strengths based on their professional or academic experience.
8) I am not sure if the institution I attend is a member of ASPPH. How can I find out?
  The ASPPH website,, has a list of all ASPPH member schools and programs. Simply click on the “Members” tab in the top navigation bar
9) To whom should my Letters of Recommendation be addressed?
  This will depend on whether or not you wish to use the same letters for applications to other ASPPH programs. If yes, then you will not want to specify a particular program – ask your recommender to state something like “Dear ASPPH Fellowship Selection Committee.” However, if you are applying to only one program, then you might want to be more specific and state the exact name of the program. For example, “Dear ASPPH/CDC Fellowship Selection Committee.”
10) Following graduation I have a previously scheduled commitment, if I am accepted, could I start later than the date you listed?
  All fellows are required to attend the orientation program and then report to their assignment. In extenuating circumstances, ASPPH will work with the host agency to determine if they are willing to delay the start date; however you will be required to attend the orientation.
11) What is the current fellowship salary?
  It is important to note that fellows are not employees of ASPPH or the host agency and as such you do not receive a salary. Fellows receive a stipend, which is approximately $43,000 - $52,000 per year (varies by education and agency). This distinction is important as there are tax implications to receiving a stipend vs salary.
12) How long is the fellowship?
  Fellowship assignments vary depending on the agency. All fellowships are for at least one year but some are for up to 3 years if the host agency has the funding and dependent upon the performance of the fellow during the previous year(s).
13) How are the fellows selected?
  The review process is open, fair and transparent. Applications will be objectively reviewed by an independent panel of reviewers. Applications are ranked and the top candidates will move on for technical review. Some programs also invite selected individuals in for in-person interviews.
14) How long is the review process once I submit my application?
  The length of the review process varies by program. On the ASPPH Fellowship website (, you may find the “Applicant Notified” date for each program for which we are currently accepting applications.
15) What qualifications do reviewers look for in applicants to the fellowship programs?
  Applicants accepted to ASPPH fellowships come from various backgrounds and experiences. They all share excellent letters of recommendation, strong academic performance, and relevant professional interests and career goals. Selected fellows include those recently graduated from ASPPH public health institutions, as well as those who have spent time working in the field.
16) Where are the fellowships located?
  Fellowship locations vary by program and individual positions. For example, most EPA positions are based in the DC-metro area, but some are based at labs & offices in other states. For the Rosenfield Global Health Fellowship, we have fellows based in Atlanta, as well as international locations. 17) I am interested in the ASPPH Public Health Policy Fellowship – is it being offered this year?
  Unfortunately, no, we are not currently offering assignments with the ASPPH Public Health Policy Fellowship Program. However, we do hope to reinstate the program in future years.
18) I am interested in the EPA fellowship but I have heard that Washington DC is a very expensive city to live in. How do current fellows manage to find housing?
  Fellows have not had a difficult time finding affordable housing in Washington, DC, or for that matter in Atlanta Georgia either. And in order to help you, ASPPH will introduce the new fellowship class with current fellows. The current fellows are a great resource in terms of housing, and other suggestions to help with relocation.
19) Will I be able to work at the specific organization as an FTE upon completion of my fellowship?
  Employment with the agency is not guaranteed. Full time employment positions are based on the needs of the host-agency and available funding for the position.

21) For the international fellowship, what are the countries where fellows are based?
  Through the ASPPH/CDC Allan Rosenfield Global Health Fellowship Program, fellows are placed in CDC offices located in the countries designated as PEPFAR countries – PEPFAR is the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief – this is the U.S. Government initiative to help save the lives of those suffering from HIV/AIDS around the world. 22) For the Global Health Fellowship Program, do fellows participate in projects only related to HIV/AIDS, or do fellows also focus on other diseases, such as Malaria and TB?
  Allan Rosenfield Global Health Fellows participate in a wide variety of projects. The specific diseases on which they might focus will depend on the priorities of the host-country, or the particular division in which they are placed. This does include diseases other than HIV/AIDS.
23) What, if any, reporting requirements do fellows have to fulfill?
  ASPPH requires all fellows to report on their projects. At the beginning of the assignment, each Fellow, in consultation with their mentor, will outline the goals and objectives they want to accomplish during their placement. Then during the year, fellows report on progress towards accomplishing those objectives and goals. At the end of the program, each fellow is required to provide a summary of their work.

  The best way to learn more about CDC, EPA, and NHTSA is to visit their websites.

Online Application System
1) May I apply to more than one fellowship at a time?
  Yes, you may apply to as many programs that may be of interest to you that are accepting applications.
2) May I apply to more than one position?
  Yes, you may apply to up to three positions per program.
3) May I reapply for a program if I wasn't selected the first time?
  Yes. Applicants may reapply as many times as they wish within their five-year eligibility period. Applicants are encouraged to reapply to a program that greatly interests them, as most applicants enrich their qualifications during the year or more between application cycles.
4) How do I know when selections will be made?
  You can log in to the application system to view your application status. You will also receive an email from Graduate Training Programs staff with an update each time your application changes status.
5) May I submit more than two recommendation letters?
  No. You are asked to submit two letters of recommendation for each program application, regardless of the number of positions within the program to which you apply. If you send more than two, ASPPH will randomly select two letters to complete your application.
6) How long should my essays be?
  Your essay should not exceed over 1500 words.
7) Do I submit my undergraduate transcripts as well as my graduate?
  No, only submit graduate transcript(s) that are related to any degree(s) from the ASPPH member school and program of public health you attended.
8) Is there a standard recommendation form ASPPH requires applicants to use?
  No, ASPPH provides the following recommendation template for applicants to use (Recommendation Form), however, this form is not required and recommenders may submit letters in their own format as long as it is on a letter head with their contact information and includes their signature.
9) Is it better for me to ask professors or colleagues for a recommendation letter?
  The decision is yours. You want to make sure that whoever you choose has a good understanding of your education and experience as it relates specifically to the position(s) to which you are applying.
10) What happens if I mailed my application before the deadline, but my application never reached ASPPH?
  Please call the appropriate ASPPH Graduate Training Program Coordinator to discuss details. We require that all mail be sent with a confirmation and tracking number to verify dates of submission.

Trouble Logging In
1) Do I need separate logins/registrations to access the Online Application System, MyFellowship, or Alumni pages?
  No. One login will give you access to various sections of the website based on your current status within the training programs system.
2) I've forgotten my password. What should I do?
  Please use our password recovery page to retrieve your password.
3) I've forgotten which email address I used to register. What should I do?
  Please use our Contact ASPPH page to send us a notification. ASPPH staff will retrieve and forward you your registration email address.
4) I no longer have access to the email account I used to register. What should I do?
  Please call an ASPPH Graduate Training Programs Coordinator directly. After we verify your information, ASPPH staff will update your registration email address.
