The ASPPH/CDC Public Health Fellowship Program was established in 1995. Its goal is to address emerging needs of public health, and to provide leadership and professional opportunities at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for students and graduate students of ASPPH member graduate schools and programs of public health. The fellowships are from one to two years in duration, depending on the needs of CDC and the fellow. The Fellowship Program was established to strengthen the relationship between the academic public health community and public health practice agencies. The types of fellowships will vary according to specific areas of research or training within CDC´s Centers/Institutes/Offices (CIOs).
What does the ASPPH Fellowship offer you?
The fellowship program is sponsored cooperatively by ASPPH and CDC, to provide leadership training in public health and prevention practice and policy. Selected fellows will have the opportunity to:
- Apply graduate education in the field
- Develop professional experience and expertise
- Contribute to public health research and practice
When and where are the Fellowships offered?
Current opportunities (2013-2014), are full-time assignments for the duration of twelve (12) months (January 2014 to January 2015).
Fellowship opportunities will be located either at CDC headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, or a CDC regional office. Locations are specified in the project descriptions. Selected fellows are required to relocate to the fellowship location; relocation expenses will not be reimbursed.
To be eligible, students must have received an MPH or Doctorate degree prior to the beginning of the fellowship. Early career professionals with MPH or Doctorate degrees (within 5 years of graduation) may also apply for the fellowship program. Applicants must have received their degree(s) from an ASPPH-member, CEPH-accredited, graduate school or program of public health (a list of accredited schools and programs with full ASPPH membership can be accessed via the ASPPH Web site), as well as be a U.S. citizen or hold a visa permitting permanent residence in the U.S., to be eligible for the fellowship program.
How do I apply to the program?
There are two components to the application process, the completion of the online application system and mailing of ONE set of hard copy documents to ASPPH in ONE package. The following lists all documents required to apply:
1. An essay (1500 word max) for each training area to which you are applying explaining your interests, strengths and qualifications for that position and how it will benefit your long-term career plans in the field of public health.
3. Two references - Name, email and phone number.
Hard copy documents:
1. Two Letters of Recommendation (from the references provided in the online application). Must be on a letter head with contact information and original signature. Does not need to be in a sealed envelope. Please request your recommenders to not fold or staple recommendation letters.
2. Signature Page available upon submitting the online application. You will need to print, and sign. Please do not fold or staple pages.
3. Official Graduate Transcripts (Member School or Program of Public Health only). This will need to be in a sealed envelope issued by your school.
4. A copy of your Green card, if you are not a US Citizen.
